Assessment & Treatment

An assessment of sexual and erectile functioning should be thorough and holistic.

The first step in assessing and treating sexual and erectile dysfunction is to visit your family physician to discuss your symptoms.

Your physician can determine if there are any medical conditions that may be impacting your sexual functioning and offer treatment as required.

Some of these conditions, like hormonal imbalances, may directly cause difficulties with sexually functioning.

Others, like diabetes, may cause a host of medical issues that may more indirectly impair functioning.

In your assessment with me as a sex therapist, in addition to taking a sexological history, other factors to be considered include (but are not limited to):

               • Attachment styles, including how secure you feel in your relationships

               • Trauma or exposure to violence, including sexual exploitation and abuse

               • Early learning about sexuality and initial sexual experiences

               • Fertility related issues

               • Self-esteem and self-worth

               • Perceptions of self as a partner

               • Partner responses to dysfunction

               • Strategies you have used to cope.

Once a clear understanding of the factors that may have contributed to your sexual and erectile dysfunction has been established, an individualized treatment plan can be created to address these issues.

Treatment modalities that will be used in your therapy are all evidenced based and empirically validated to be reliable and effective interventions to treat sexual and erectile dysfunction and can include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is an effective approach to the treatment of anxiety, depression and panic that can contribute to sexual dysfunction.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a skill based approach to therapy that supports the development of the ability to regulate difficult emotions and to avoid making judgments against oneself.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy supports acceptance of self and promotes committed actions that improves and enriches your life.

Narrative Therapy encourages individuals to see their problems as external to themselves, rather than as truths about their abilities to cope with particular difficulties.

Mindfulness refers to the practice of being fully present in each moment to reduce distractions like painful emotions or anxiety.

Emotion Focused Therapy is an approach to couples therapy that is used to deescalate conflict in relationships and provide couples with an opportunity to identify and repair ‘injuries’ in their ability to feel safe and secure in the context of their relationships.

Time for Change

Your treatment may include a variety of behavioural interventions that you may implement, either on your own or with partners, in between sessions to enhance your ability to improve your capacity to achieve the kind of sexual arousal and functioning you desire.

Change is possible.

It can be a difficult decision to seek treatment for sexual difficulties and it is important to seek treatment from an experienced, skilled and compassionate therapist. I welcome any questions you may have to support you to achieve better control.
